Bridging worlds -
A journey from Statistical Programming to Large Language Model implementation
by Ally Sprik

This presentation explores the journey of a SAS trainee who transitioned to a diverse technology stack to develop context-driven large language models (LLMs).

Ally Sprik will share her experiences in progressively building a full-stack LLM application, highlighting challenges and opportunities encountered along the way. The audience will be guided through a technical overview of the project, covering:

  1. Selecting technologies and design considerations
  2. Transferring knowledge between programming languages
  3. Leveraging existing tools effectively
  4. Wrangling the behemoths that are large language models

Key topics include:

  • Benefits of a language and package-agnostic approach to project design
  • Various approaches to grounding large language models
  • Implementing a simple web development stack for frontend-backend integration
  • Open-source resources and learning strategies
  • Best practices and lessons learned during the process

This presentation aims to elucidate options and decision-making processes in (AI) development, thereby encouraging professionals to explore innovative technologies beyond traditional statistical programming.
